The exam
What is the AI-500 exam?
AI-500 is the Microsoft Certified: Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert exam — an expert-level credential for practitioners who take a multi-agent system from a whiteboard sketch to a governed, observable production deployment on Azure. It's currently in beta: you take it as normal, but scores are released after Microsoft closes the beta window and finalises the item statistics.
AI-500 is design-heavy and production-focused. It validates that you can architect multi-agent solutions (decomposing goals into workflows, agents, and tools; specifying protocols, memory architecture, and Zero Trust components), develop them in Azure (advanced prompt engineering, multi-agent RAG and context management, MCP tool ecosystems, and orchestration patterns via the Microsoft Agent Framework, LangChain, and LangGraph), evaluate and monitor them (agent evaluators, context-window diagnostics, tracing and cost management), and secure, govern, and deploy them (identity and RBAC, layered guardrails, and release strategy). Expect long, constraint-laden scenarios — a control loop that never terminates, a retrieval layer that drops one condition of a compound question, an agent whose tool calls started failing the moment it was published — and a question about which change actually fixes it.
Every question in Azure Mastery's AI-500 bank is mapped to the current Microsoft skills outline for multi-agent solution design, development, evaluation, and security. Read the official outline at learn.microsoft.com.

Architect Multi-Agent Solutions15–20%
Explore key topics
The smallest domain, and the foundation the rest of the exam builds on. Decompose goals and objectives into workflows, agents, subagents, and tools; specify agent personas, scopes, autonomy levels, and behavioural guidelines; choose communication protocols between agents and between agents and other components; design short-term and long-term memory architectures with context sharing; and specify components for Zero Trust multi-agent solutions, including per-agent identity scoping and multi-tier state persistence. Around 6–12 questions per sitting.
Develop Multi-Agent Solutions in Azure30–35%
Explore key topics
The largest domain by a wide margin. Advanced prompt engineering and context-aware multi-agent behaviours; agent memory, context management, and multi-agent RAG and knowledge integration (chunking, embedding quality, retrieval precision); building and integrating tool ecosystems, including MCP servers and clients; and implementing orchestration — hub-and-spoke, sequential, parallel, peer-to-peer, and orchestrator-subagent patterns, human-in-the-loop, caching strategies, and orchestration frameworks such as the Microsoft Agent Framework, LangChain, and LangGraph. Around 12–21 questions.
Evaluate, Optimize, and Monitor Multi-Agent Solutions20–25%
Explore key topics
Evaluation and validation strategies, including human review in Foundry and evaluations for memory, knowledge, tools, and prompts. Optimising prompt and model performance — task duration, parallelism, and diagnosing context-window issues such as sliding-window amnesia and summary drift. Observability and monitoring — reliability, drift and quality-regression detection, token-usage and cost strategy, and tracing in Foundry. Around 8–15 questions.
Secure, Govern, and Deploy Multi-Agent Solutions20–25%
Explore key topics
Resource access and RBAC, authentication flows (user impersonation, on-behalf-of, API keys, OAuth 2.0), and secrets management with Azure Key Vault. Designing a multi-intervention guardrail strategy across user inputs, tool calls, tool responses, and outputs, plus shift-left security with the AI Red Teaming Agent. Deployment — release methodology (DTAP, blue/green, canary), multi-environment release strategy, testing, and CI/CD requirements. Around 8–15 questions.
Designed for AI-500
How Azure Mastery helps you pass AI-500
Azure Mastery ships with 452 AI-500 practice questions, every one written specifically against the current skills outline. Each question carries a domain tag mapped to the official four domains (architect, develop, evaluate, secure/govern/deploy), so you always know which area you're being tested on and where your weak spots are clustered. Orchestration-pattern trade-offs, agent-identity failure scenarios, evaluator selection, and guardrail-layering questions appear throughout to rehearse blueprint-relevant decisions.
The on-device Exam IQ engine predicts your AI-500 score before you sit the exam. After roughly 30 questions it has enough signal to give a confidence-scored prediction (e.g. "786 ±37, 68% confidence") — and tells you the specific topics that are dragging your readiness down. No vague "study more" advice; just a ranked list of objectives where improvement would move your score the furthest.
The adaptive study plan rebuilds itself from your answer history. Get a scenario question wrong? The engine surfaces another question in the same domain in your next session. Master a topic across three sessions and it backs off, prioritising the next-highest-leverage gap. The plan optimises for the gap between where you are and the 700 pass score, not for blind volume.
Knowledge decay tracking matters at the expert tier more than anywhere else — four dense domains covering everything from memory architecture to release methodology is a lot to retain, and the orchestration pattern or evaluator you nailed three weeks into your study window is the thing you'll blank on by exam day if you stop revising. Azure Mastery tracks every topic's decay curve and flags topics approaching expiry. The padlock icon on the Today screen is your "revisit before you forget" cue, and weak-spot drills automatically pull from decayed topics first.
Blueprint-aligned exam rehearsal uses a timed, blueprint-weighted session: a randomised 40–60-question set drawn from original practice questions, weighted by domain percentages from the current outline, with the 100-minute timer running and no jumping back to flag-and-review. It uses original practice content and does not reproduce Microsoft exam questions.
Answer Coach pairs the correct reasoning with option-by-option rationale where available, then turns each miss into a private, grounded lesson: the misconception, key distinction, and rule to remember. Choose explanations after each question or at the end of a practice test, then jump straight back to missed answers; session notes stay ready when you revisit. Authored guidance is always available, while supported devices may optionally rewrite a note on-device only after grounding checks.
During your first week, Aura adapts the next step as you go. Every session ends with a concise recap of what changed, what to focus on, and the best follow-up.
Everything essential runs on-device. Your answer history, readiness gauge, and coaching stay private. Optional sync uses your private iCloud account; there is no Azure Mastery account, tracking, or external processing server.
6-week study plan
Suggested AI-500 study plan
This is an expert-level exam, so most candidates need six to ten weeks even with existing Foundry and agent-development experience. The plan below maps onto the four AI-500 domains — with double time on "Develop", which carries nearly a third of the exam — Azure Mastery's adaptive sessions, and the in-app exam simulator. Adjust pace to taste — the readiness gauge tells you when you're done, not the calendar.
Architecture and the core build
Week 1: Architect Multi-Agent Solutions — decomposing goals into workflows, agents, and tools, agent personas and autonomy levels, communication protocols, memory architecture, and Zero Trust component specification.
Week 2: Begin Develop Multi-Agent Solutions in Azure — advanced prompt engineering, context management, and multi-agent RAG and knowledge integration.
Tool ecosystems, orchestration, and evaluation
Week 3: Finish Develop Multi-Agent Solutions in Azure — MCP servers and tool ecosystems, and orchestration patterns (sequential, concurrent, handoff, group chat, magentic) with the Microsoft Agent Framework, LangChain, and LangGraph.
Week 4: Evaluate, Optimize, and Monitor Multi-Agent Solutions — the agent evaluator set, context-window failure modes, and tracing and observability in Foundry.
Security, governance, deployment, and exam sharpening
Week 5: Secure, Govern, and Deploy Multi-Agent Solutions — identity and RBAC after publishing, authentication flows, Key Vault secrets, layered guardrails, and release methodologies (DTAP, blue/green, canary).
Week 6: Run Focus Weak Spots every morning, then two end-to-end Exam Simulator runs at full 100-minute length. Schedule the exam when readiness gauge is 750+ with reasonable confidence.

Frequently asked
AI-500 FAQs
How much does the AI-500 exam cost?
Microsoft prices AI-500 by the country or region where the exam is proctored and has not published a single flat fee for the beta — check the official exam page for your local price when you register. Microsoft sometimes runs free-voucher promotions during events such as Microsoft Build or Microsoft Ignite, so check your Microsoft Learn profile for any active offers before booking. The certification renews annually with a free online assessment, so there is no recurring fee.
Does the AI-500 certification expire?
Yes. Microsoft Expert certifications including AI-500 expire annually. Renewal is free — a short online assessment on Microsoft Learn within the six-month window before your expiration date. The renewal targets recent skills outline updates, so staying current is straightforward if you remain broadly active in the role. (Fundamentals certifications such as AZ-900 are different — those don't expire.)
What is the AI-500 retake policy if I fail?
The first retake is allowed after 24 hours. Second and third retakes each require a 14-day wait. Microsoft caps retakes at five attempts per 12-month rolling period. Each attempt requires a new voucher purchase.
How long should I study for AI-500?
Allow six to ten weeks of focused study if you already build agentic solutions on Microsoft Foundry with Python. Spend longer if orchestration frameworks, Model Context Protocol, agent identity and RBAC, or evaluation and observability tooling are new to you. This is an expert-level exam that expects hands-on production experience, not just familiarity — Azure Mastery's readiness gauge helps you decide when to schedule it.
AI-500 vs AI-103 — which do I need?
Different tiers and different scope. AI-103 (Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate) validates building AI apps and single agents on Microsoft Foundry with Python — models, retrieval, vision, speech, and one agent talking to its own tools. AI-500 (Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert) is the expert tier above it: architecting, orchestrating, evaluating, and securing systems where multiple agents coordinate in production, including Microsoft Agent Framework orchestration patterns, Agent2Agent and MCP integration, and per-agent identity and guardrails. The dependency is also formal: Microsoft lists the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate certification (earned via AI-103) as a required prerequisite, so you receive the Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert credential only once you hold it and pass AI-500.
AI-500 vs AB-100 — architect or engineer?
Different roles at a similar level. AB-100 (Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect) is the business-architecture view of agentic AI — ROI analysis, build-vs-buy across Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry, and Power Platform, governance, and ALM, aimed at architects who plan agentic solutions across an enterprise. AI-500 is the hands-on engineering expert exam — designing, coding, evaluating, and securing the multi-agent systems themselves, with Microsoft Agent Framework, MCP servers, orchestration patterns, and agent identity. Pick AB-100 if you're deciding which agentic patterns a business should adopt; pick AI-500 if you're the one building and running them.
Is Azure Mastery free for AI-500 prep?
The app is free to download and includes a free allowance of AI-500 questions so you can try every feature. The full bank of 452 AI-500 practice questions unlocks with a one-time exam-pack purchase, or you can unlock every exam in the catalogue with a subscription or a one-time lifetime upgrade.
Does AI-500 practice work offline?
Yes. Question practice, scoring, and the readiness prediction all run on-device, so you can study on a flight or a commute with no connection. No account is required, and your study data stays on your device with optional private iCloud sync.
Is there an AI-500 practice test mode?
Yes — timed practice sessions use original, blueprint-aligned questions, published timing guidance, and supported interactive item types. Adaptive study sessions and Focus Weak Spots then target the domains where your accuracy is lowest.
